Blas George Mendez, Sr.

Blas Mendez passed away this past week. He wasn’t a member of 1st Battalion Association. He served in Charley Co. at Camp Reasoner in 1967 and 1968. He was a retired police officer in San Marcos, TX. Please say a prayer for his family and give Blas an Ooo Rah!

Thank you, Marines. I’d like to share some of your comments with Blas Mendez’ son and family. Blas Mendez and Phillip Guerrero, both from San Marcos, TX. served in Charlie Co., 1st. Recon Bn. They both returned about home within a month of each other. Phillip Guerrero died in 1987 of a self-inflected gun shot. Blas died last week of Dementia.

Blas George Mendez, Sr, age 77, entered eternal peace on Wednesday, July 3, after a long battle with dementia.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Adelaida Mendez; his brothers, Frank, Jesse, and Paul Mendez; his sisters, Isabel Mejia, Janie Alvarez, Carmen Garibay, and Connie Hernandez.

Blas, the youngest of 13 children, was born on February 3, 1947, to Jose and Adelaida Mendez in San Marcos, Texas. After Blas graduated from San Marcos High School in 1966, he went on to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. in July 1966 and served until May 1972. He returned to his hometown where he became a patrolman for the San Marcos Police Department from 1972 to 1981.

Blas is a survivor of the Vietnam War and a survivor of Cancer. He is our hero. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Guadalupe R Mendez; his four sons, Blas G Mendez, Jr. (Letty), Brian Mendez (Sylvia), Bob G Mendez (Stephanie), and Brandon G Mendez (Patricia Torres); his only daughter, Belinda G Macejewski (Mark); his grandchildren, Alana G Mendez, Katalina M Mendez, Blas G Mendez, III, Aubrey L Mendez, and Jax G Mendez; his brothers, Raymond Mendez (Belia), Pete Mendez (Alice), and Joe Mendez (Dora); sisters, Terry Cruz (Dan), and Mary Ann Gonzales (Robert).

Visitation will begin at 5:00pm – 9:00pm, Wednesday, July 10, 2024 with Recitation of Holy Rosary beginning at 7:00pm at Los Angeles Funeral Home, 300 Cheatham St., San Marcos, Texas. Morning visitation will begin at 8:00am, Thursday, July 11, 2024 at Los Angeles Funeral Home followed by Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:00am at St. John’s Catholic Church, 624 E. Hopkins St., San Marcos, Texas. Father Brion Zarsky will officiate. Interment will follow at Memory Lawn Memorial Park, 19106 San Marcos Hwy, Martindale, Texas. Full Military Honors will be conducted DAV Disabled American Veterans
