Notice to the Members

1st Reconnaissance Battalion Association

Last update: June 23rd, 2021

This is an update to all in 1st Recon Bn Association. I sent out 1325 emails to our members with email addresses within the last two weeks.

308 emails were rejected and returned "Bad email address" . So that means we have lost the ability to communicate for free with over 23% of our membership.

I'm in the process of bringing our membership directory current. That should take me a week or two. There are several reasons we had such a large rejection in emails.

1.  We had no reunion last year with Covid-19 looming on the horizon. We may have deceased members we don't know about. I can follow up on a search but that's going to take months. That will cost our association about $300.00 in fees to websites that would make my job easier.

2. Another reason, the members computers and servers may have been down at the time I sent out the 1st emails. I followed up with a second and third email over a week or two and we ended up with 308 rejections. The original number was over 350.

3. Another reason, which is the most common reason for return emails, the members Info are not up to date. Please check your membership directory and update your Info. This will allow the Association to send out messages from time to time. So please keep your information up-to-date. Thank You

4. Another option to keep our membership directory current is to send out a mailing each year to all of our members. Most likely a postcard would be sent out to each member in July announcing our reunion information. Estimated cost of doing that would be around $1,000.00 and a ton of man hours. This option should be brought up at our next meeting. It may make sense if you think about it. It would bring more members out to the reunion each year which generates revenue for the association.

Floyd,

Another reason is people die, especially old Recon Marines.

The postcard once a year is a good idea.

Doing most of it by email is also good idea, really keeps costs down.

Communication is a prerequisite for an organization and cannot be ignored or short-changed.

Thank you again for all your work on this!
Personally, I think emails are enough. It is up to each member to keep your records up to date. The post card suggestion, at least to me, appears to be too costly, plus a lot
of man hours. Too time consuming and expensive.

Hi – I guess if you have addresses you could send out a regular mailing to those members who didn’t respond to your email ?
