Sgt Jim Southall

Members of Lance corporal Jim Southall's 17th patrol (A Rescue Mission) were:

Cpl Jimmy Linn Team Leader, Jimmy will work with Jim Southall 10 times in 1968. Patrols 14-18 & patrols 21-25. Jimmy Linn was the best patrol leader Jim Southall had in Vietnam and I can verify that he was my first patrol leader. See photos on this patrols 22-23. Jimmy Linn passed away in 1997 from Agent Orange. 

Cpl J. Bowland Primary Radioman, Bowland will work with Jim Southall Seven times in 1968. Patrols 5, 11-15 & 18.

PFC Doug Wolfe will work with Jim Southall eleven times in 1968. Patrols 13-19, 24-27 before Jim Southall was wounded in action (WIA) on his 28th patrol. Doug Wolfe worked as a point man on most of the patrols.

PFC Jerry Keker will appear on thirteen patrols with Jim Southall in 1968. Patrols 12-19 & patrols 21-23 and patrols 25-27. Jerry died peacefully on February 7, 2015, in Denver, Colorado click here. Jerry carried the M-79 on most patrols.

PFC Delbert Enos will appear on fifteen patrols with Jim Southall in 1968. Patrols 10-13, 15-19, 21-23 & 25-27. Delbert worked as the Tail End Charlie (Rear Point) on most of the patrols in 1968.

LCpl Dave Morris carry the M60 Machine Gun on this rercue mission on Hill 200 June 3rd, 1968. Dave worked with Jim Southall on eleven patrols in 1968. Patrols 2-3, 12, 18-19, 21-23 & 25-27 in 1968. Dave Morris was excellent with the M60 machine gun.

HM3 Michael A Domino, worked with Jim Southall on eight in 1968. Patrols 11-18  Michael was one of the best corpsman in 1st Recon Battalion.

PFC Nelson Livingston Alternate Radioman, Livingston worked with Jim Southall on thirteen patrols in 1968. Patrols 14-19 and patrols 21-27 in 1st Recon Bn.

Corporal Grover Wayne Peavy, worked with Jim Southall on three patrols in 1968. Patrols 13, 16 & 17 this would be the last patrol for Corporal Peavy in 1st Recon Battalion. See Cpl Peavy patrol reports 110, 133, 162, 215, 240, 349 & 359-68.

RECON TEAM "CAYENNE", Hill 200 - 27 miles SW of Da Nang, 9 KM W-NW OF HIEP DUC VILLAGE

1st Recon Bn. Command Chronology:
032245H at 833276 patrol was attacked by an estimated 40 or more VC. Black PJ's, rifles, ctg belts, grenades and suspected satchel charges. The attack was very sudden and opened with large explosions of an unknown origin. As the patrol returned fire, VC swept through their position in the few minutes immediately following the explosions. The action resulted in 8 USMC KIA, 7 USMC WIA, 1VC KIA conf., and 6VC KIA prob. 3 USMC WIA (1 later DOW) were med-evaced. Due to darkness, weather, and negative comm, the rest of the patrol remained in position until a reaction force aided in their extraction at 040700H. The VC attacked in 2 groups from the North and "SE". Spooky supported the patrol the remainder of the night with unknown results. There was negative enemy activity after the initial assult.
