Louisville, 2001. This reunion was just after 9-11. Commandant Jim Jones attended, as did his mother. She was out guest of honor. For those who don't know, Amphibious Recon from WWII was led by Commandant Jone's father. I think I recognize a few of these folks.

I served at 3rd RECON Bn DELTA COMPANY 1989 to 1992 and then went to 1st Recon Bn from 1991 to 1992. SSGT Tom picked me up and was put right on a 6 month float platoon and left the Marines after that. I did go to ARC with a bunch of 1st Recon guys as well. Semper Fi.

Message from our Secretary of the Association

Hi folks,
Sorry to be late on this but I wanted to share the results of our telecom with those that were unable to join.
Reunion update:
It is at the Orleans Casino and Hotel and runs from Wednesday August 16 (Travel) through Saturday the 19th. However, we'll be done Friday night so Saturday can also be a travel day. Please note that the division reunion runs from August 14-20. At this time, we do not know what excursions they might be planning. For this reason, Charlie wants to plan ours now in such a way as to enable our people to just sign up for the minimum. Vegas is very expensive. When division comes out with their excursions, there may be something you're interested in and want to come earlier.
Thursday will be the Leatherneck Lounge and American Shooters gun range across the street. For those Marines, Corpsmen and spouses, here's your chance for some trigger time. They have most everything known to man available to shoot (see link). Friday will be our business meeting during the day and our Dinner and fund-raising Auction, Friday evening at the Orleans. Saturday, for those that are interested, the division will have their business meeting and normally their banquet that evening. Their banquet is a dress up affair and is quite impressive if you've never been to one.
https://americanshooters.com
Also, Larry discussed our plans for the Memorial Day Wreath Laying at the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion Memorial in Virginia.
This year the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion Memorial Service and Wreath Laying ceremony will be at noon on Saturday May 27 at the battalion memorial near the Marine Corps Museum in Virginia. After the ceremony they all go to the Globe and Laurel. Everyone is more than welcome. Any questions get in touch with Larry Feldman
Just wanted to give you guys an update on what you might have missed. If anyone that was on the call, sees something I missed or got wrong, speak up.
Semper Fidelis,
rono

Recon Marines, Marines, friends of Marines,

We traveled to Vietnam in March 2023 with Vietnam Battlefield Tours. We visited the site of Camp Reasoner and can report that the Reasoner Sign and Guard Shack remain in good shape on the north side of what was Division road ,north side of Hill 327.

As usual, one had to know where to look, as the undergrowth had grown over top of both sign and shack. With that said, the new item was a 4 ft high chain link fence around each structure with cement fence post. Must have been a covid period addition. Undergrowth growing directly over it.

Directly behind the sign and guard shark [ 10 feet] the downhill side that was Camp Reasoner has been excavated vertically dropping off a straight 500 feet and all the land that was Camp Reasoner has been hauled away. From where LZ 401 was back to the now vertical cliff is now a large rock quarry lake at least as large as Camp Reasoner in is footprint. We named the lake, “Lake Reasoner”.

A few photos attached.

What did you do in the war Grandpaw ?
Did you drive a tank or a Jeep ?
Where did you sleep ?
Did the people have dogs and kitties ?
What are skivvies ?
Did you ever get to fly ?
How did you pass the time ?
How long were you there ?
Were you ever scared ?
Such are the questions I hope I'm never asked
Cause those questions would be a task
Not that I wouldn't say but I won't
and ask I hope they don't

they ate the dogs and the cats .

I'm just a simple old warrior who served in the uniform of this country's military in War who loves to discuss all aspects of life. It is my firm conviction that if one understands what caused the war, how the war was conducted, and the Reconstruction Years that followed, one will know what this country is about. Dear Charlie:

Thank you for the reminder and invitation to respond.
In response to your outreach initative, I decided to come to Las Vegas.

I have purchased airline tickets and booked a room at the Orleans August 13-20. Since I am coming early I am willing to help with any prepartion set up needs at the hotel.

Just FYI, I am a volunteer Mentor with the Ramsey County Veterans Criminal Court.

I have been doing this for 8 years. I am with my third mentee, and the first who was not a Marine!
I have spent as long as 2 1/2 to 3 years with each mentee. The criminal convictions have been related to long term crack addiction, domestic violence and this time long term meth addiction.

My first mentee was facing his fifth felony conviction for crack possession. He graduated from the Vet Court program and never returend to drug abuse. But he passed from a heart attack last year and I went to his funeral.
He was Alan Hopkins, a Lance Corporal M-79 man with Gulf 2/9, decorated for valor at Koh Tang Island Cambodia May 15, 1975. (Mayaguez Incident)
Alvin was on the first chopper to land on Koh Tang, and badly wounded, was loaded on the last chopper off Koh Tang.

It is satisfying for me to work with all these veterans.

All the best and see you in Las Vegas!

Semper FI,
Mark Bayuk

Re: 1st Recon Battalion Association 2023 Reunion

I AM UNABLE TO CONTINUE DUE TO HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS. ‘AGENT ORANGE HAS BEEN KICKING MY ASS”, DIABETES 2, LUNGS-COPD, TESTICULAR CANCER, AND I’M RATED 100% DISABILITY AT THE V.A.. I’M HAVING ANOTHER BACK SURGERY IN THREE WEEKS, I’M PRETTY MUCH HOMEBOUND. PTSD AS WELL. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A GREAT REUNION.

Reunion Attendance

Hi folks,

Charlie is trying to get a head count for our upcoming reunion. I've posted on FB and included the people that have told me they were coming.

I've got 14 names but there are some spouses coming and some I'm listing as Family for which I've got queries out to get a better number. Regardless, I've got at least 19 total so far.

If your name is NOT on the list and you plan to attend, just respond by email to me. And if you know someone that is attending and is not on the list, let me know. I'll update this version and redistribute it as needed.

This does NOT correspond to Creg's list of folks that have paid for either the Luncheon or the Dinner.

Semper Fi,

ron

Re: 1st Recon Battalion Association 2023 Reunion

I served in 1st Force Recon Co in RVN in all of 1966 as a 2533 radio operator with 1st and 3d platoons Killer Kane. I’m still in touch with my surviving teammates and Col Andy. I want to thank you for your invitation and reaching out to us. Those of us still in the game are getting long in the tooth and insertions/extractions from reunion sites are a bit more difficult than during our time in the sun. We appreciate your invitation and thoughts and wish you all an enjoyable and bonding reunion.
