When most people think of women's contributions to World War II, the Rosie the Riveter poster is probably the first thing that comes to mind. But many of the women crucial to the war effort do not have that kind of household name recognition. About 350,000 American women served in uniform—roughly the size of the active duty Navy today. They did everything from fixing planes and tanks to drawing maps to help horses get through the woods of Normandy.

THE WALL

Standing here in front of the Wall
silently reading your name
Solemnly I thank you one and all
Each of you different, yet the same

The list seems forever endless
but I remember your faces
You made the supreme sacrifice, I confess
as I walk slowly with measured paces

Each one of you answered the call
Willingly or not, you gave your lives
Rest easy, my Brothers - heroes all
The Nation still survives

In the sunlit springtime of our youth.

Those who did not come back alive remain

And a part of them is with us always."

Last night I awoke to the sounds of thunder. I was recalling a small part of a day a long time ago. As if it was yesterday...

Today is a particularly dreary, rainy day. Lookout Mountain is socked in good. It is not unusual for it to be socked in. Hell they fought the Battle Above the Clouds there during the Civil War.

However, today it put me in mind of another dreary, socked in ridge I was on for around 2 hours on 3 June, 1968. Known only to me as Hill 200, it was a desolate, indefensible place that somebody in the 1st Mardiv G3 shop picked off the map to insert my platoon on as an observation post & radio relay.

August 13th, 2024 with over 100 aboard. It’s time for the annual Titan Boat Cruise with dinner.

During World War II, the Willys MB, the famous Jeep, was stored and transported disassembled in wooden boxes for easy handling and quick assembly on the battlefield. This storage method ensured that the vehicles arrived in good condition to tackle different terrains. The Jeep was developed in 1941 by Willys-Overland Motors to meet the needs of the US military. With four-wheel drive and a robust design, the Willys MB and its version produced by Ford, the GPW, have become essential for military transport. After the war, Willys began manufacturing civilian versions, which evolved into the Jeep brand we know today. The name "Jeep" probably comes from the pronunciation of the letters "GP" (General Purpose), used to describe the vehicle. Another theory suggests that the name may have been inspired by the character "Eugene the Jeep" from the Popeye comics. The Jeep remains a symbol of durability and versatility in the off-road vehicle segment.

Memorial to Jacobs Creek Flash Flood

On the evening of August 30, 2003 a heavy rain event caused storm water to swell out of the banks of the usually dry Jacobs Creek. Located just south of Emporia, the small stream was now flooding the Kansas Turnpike. Two of the stranded motorist, Al Larsen and Ryan Lane are credited with saving the lives of seven other travellers that night; getting them out of their cars to higher ground. A wall of water caused by a heavy down burst, washed the stranded vehicles down stream, taking six lives with it. The memorial was to celebrate the survivors and remember the valiant efforts of Al and Ryan

Jokes-of-the-Day

Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a State Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 MPH. He thinks to himself, this driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!" So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies -- two in the front seat and three in the back -- wide eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him, Officer, I don't understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit!

What seems to be the problem? "Ma'am," the officer replies, you weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers. Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly... Twenty-two miles an hour! "The old woman says a bit proudly. The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that 22 was the route number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error. But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask... Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't muttered a single peep this whole time, "the officer asks. Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Route 119...

Bill,

Thanks for the offer, but there is no need to do this. If you have the chance, however, you might pass along the attached flyer to Charlie so he can post it on their web page or hand it out to the attendees. I sold a ton of copies at the 3rd Force Recon reunion this year, but that is best done face to face with attendees and I will be in Scotland when the 1st Recon Battalion has their reunion.

I'm planning on going down for part of one day. I'd be happy to drop off some of your books in their Hospitality room if you want....could put a collection box up on the "honor system" perhaps?

I'll meet up with Charlie Kershaw and Mike Fallon for a little while. My time with 1st Recon was all back before VN, so I don't know any/many of the attendees.

Some of the Marines from the local Recon I&I staff will also be there, and are hosting a BBQ at their CP.

Thanks buddy, for your tireless efforts in keeping us accounted for.

Semper Fi,

Floyd,

Per your list of non-active emails, etc.

I wanted to pass this along.

SSgt Dan Mulvihill, then PFC Mulvihill in 1966, passed 2 years ago. I learned of this a few days ago.

He was from Chicago, like me, and around 1986 we bumped into each other at a Marine Event.

Dan was with Jimmy Howard on Howard's Hill in June, 1966. He was Howard's radioman. In 1992, when I tried to get Howard to come to Chicago for a Marine event, I tracked him down in San Diego. He said he never traveled outside of California because of his combat wounds, etc. Being the a-hole that I am - I pestered him a few more times. Finally he said, OK - but only if you find "Mo".

What is a MO, I asked. Howard said, Danny Mulvihill, he was my radioman and he turned 19 the night of the firefight.

So, it took some doing and I found Mo.

I guess Howard was like this with all his platoon - like a 2nd Father - he loved them all and engaged in Irish drinking songs whenever they suffered wounded or KIA's.

A few years after that, about 2am, I woke to a CBS overnight program still on the TV in our bedroom. The Medal of Honor Society was having its annual meeting and the newest recipients were sitting and chatting with the CBS host. They both said, wearing the Medal was more difficult than earning it. They always had to keep proper posture, positive attitude, etc. Civilians judged our military by their behavior. And the MOH Society had one of their own to guide them in this activity. It was Jimmy Howard. Both said they viewed him as their favorite uncle, one said, Howard was like my, Uncle Blaine, who always - always - was great to be around.

When Howard and Mulvihill reconnected in Chicago in 1992 it was a rare sight. Kathy, Dan's lovely wife, got a bear hug from Howard like she was his little niece. We had a great time. Picture attached.

So Howards' gone, so is Dan and so is Dan Jr., their son, who was killed by a drunk drive at 29 Palms a few years ago. Jr. was a US Marine and the Pride of the Corps and his family. The other driver was drunk.

Sad News,

Paul O.

SSgt Dan Mulvihill, then PFC Mulvihill in 1966, passed 2 years ago.

Thanks Paul for the update... Our numbers seem to be climbing in the wrong direction since I've been back from San Antonio. I believe this is about the fifth memorial page I have done this week. Dan Mulvihill we'll be missed by the Association.
