9/11   23 Years Ago

Last night I awoke to the sounds of thunder. I was recalling a small part of a day a long time ago. As if it was yesterday...

Today is a particularly dreary, rainy day. Lookout Mountain is socked in good. It is not unusual for it to be socked in. Hell they fought the Battle Above the Clouds there during the Civil War.

However, today it put me in mind of another dreary, socked in ridge I was on for around 2 hours on 3 June, 1968. Known only to me as Hill 200, it was a desolate, indefensible place that somebody in the 1st Mardiv G3 shop picked off the map to insert my platoon on as an observation post & radio relay.

D-Day was the first day of Operation Overlord, the Allied attack on German-occupied Western Europe, which began on the beaches of Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. Primarily US, British, and Canadian troops, with naval and air support, attacked five beaches, landing some 135,000 men in a day widely considered to have changed history.

CPL Travis Martin Woods

Cpl. Travis M. Woods of Redding, California was a 2004 Foothill High School graduate. He was an incredible young man who had a lot of family and friends who loved him. The young marine had a passion for BMX bikes, surfing and snowboarding. And he was a perfectionist, who would practice each sport until he was an expert. Travis was "quiet," but was also a "magnet" for his friends. His personality drew people around him. When he set out to do something, he did it all the way. His career was highlighted by a number of awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment. He was 21.

The Battle of Shewan was a military engagement between Coalition forces and Taliban insurgents that took place on August 8, 2008, near the village of Shewan in the Bala Buluk district, Farah Province, Afghanistan.

He was killed by a remote car bomb while conducting combat operations on his second tour in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Christopher J. Antonik, 29, of Crystal Lake, Ill., died July 11 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Floyd:
Personal FYI:
This past February I experienced a stroke like seizure which put me in the hospital for a few days. The culprit turned out to be a small brain tumor which was surgically removed in June. A biopsy showed positive for cancer but a post op MRI indicated that the cancer had been confined to the tumor and had not spread into the brain. Doc plans to continue to monitor brain w/ periodic MRI. Recovery has been routine but slow with no complications. More later.

I'm just a simple old warrior who served in the uniform of this country's military in War who loves to discuss all aspects of life. It is my firm conviction that if one understands what caused the war, how the war was conducted, and the Reconstruction Years that followed, one will know what this country is about.
